Although it need not be part of the daily life of a person once they have reached the age of sixty five and officially become known as a senior, depression is not an uncommon condition at that stage of life. Senior mental health is an issue that is not looked at seriously enough by many family member s and friends. They fail to realize that becoming a senior so often includes vast life changes. Most seniors must retire at sixty five. This in itself is a huge life change for someone who has spent most of their lives working and keeping active in their job. Their days are no longer full and many feel that they are no longer productive once they stop work. They get up in the morning with nothing o do and nowhere to go.

As well at this stage in their lives many seniors begin to lose valued friends and family. People they have known for large parts of their lives pass away leaving them with only memoires. They often lose their spouse in their senior years. This can severely affect senior mental health when they find themselves alone after a long term relationship. Loneliness is a big problem for people as they age.

As well, this is the point in the lives of many when health issues become a bigger deal. They begin to have issues with hearing, seeing, walking and other medical conditions that may pose threats to their lives, or treatments that requires long hospital stays. These new found health issues are also known to cause senior mental health instability. Fortunately there are services that are provided to help seniors deal with these issues. Any senior can access these services through their health care provider. They can go to see counselors or people can come to their homes and help with in home medical services that may make their lives a little easier and so help to assuage mental health issues. Sometimes just being able to talk to someone about the number of changes that take place as a person ages is all that is needed to help them deal with their lives.
